PetroChina Canada

PetroChina Canada (PCC) is a wholly owned subsidiary of PetroChina Company Limited which is partially owned by China National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC), a state-owned enterprise. CNPC is China’s largest oil company and the world’s third largest oil company, operating 91 energy-related projects in over 35 countries and regions. PCC has invested billions of dollars in an asset-rich portfolio of upstream, midstream and downstream operations. In Alberta, this includes our MacKay River and Dover oilsands projects, Duvernay Shale Gas and a 50% interest in the Grand Rapids Pipeline. In British Columbia, we hold joint venture interests in the Groundbirch tight gas project and LNG Canada.

PetroChina Canada is recruiting for a Corporate Counsel to join the Legal Team in Calgary.

 

Reporting to the VP, Legal, the Corporate Counsel is responsible for managing a broad range of legal activities while also providing legal advice and support to business units, asset teams and their respective projects.

 

Accountabilities:

The accountabilities of this position include, but are not limited to:

·         Provide timely legal advice and support to business units, asset teams, and management on corporate, commercial, employment, and regulatory matters and projects.

·         Identify, assess, and manage legal risks, and recommend practical, business-focused solutions to ensure day-to-day operations comply with PCC policies, industry standards, and applicable laws and regulations.

·         Draft, review, and negotiate a broad range of contracts and agreements, safeguarding PCC’s interests and providing clear guidance to internal stakeholders.

·         Ensure that commercial agreements and legal documents align with PCC’s strategic objectives, mitigate legal risks, and comply with industry standards.

·         Prepare, review, and revise corporate legal documents, including master services agreements, consulting agreements, drilling and drilling services agreements, marketing agreements, formal responses on behalf of PCC, and other legal instruments.

·         Provide legal support on environmental, health and safety, and sustainability-related matters, including compliance with applicable regulations.

·         Monitor developments in laws, regulations, and industry standards and assess their impact on PCC’s business and operations.

·         Engage and manage external legal counsel, including oversight of scope, budgets, and performance.

·         Assist VP, Legal & Internal Audit with other legal matters as requested.

 

 

Qualifications:

 

·         A law degree (J.D. or LL.B.) from an accredited law school and admission to the Alberta Bar.

·         Over 5-10 years of post-call legal experience in private practice and/or an in-house environment.

·         Experience in corporate law, contract negotiation, and commercial matters.

·         Knowledge of current oil and gas industry standards and applicable legislation.

·         Demonstrated sense of urgency and commitment to delivering results in a fast-paced, high-pressure environment.

·         Proven ability to identify legal risks and develop practical, business-oriented solutions.

·         Ability to manage multiple priorities and consistently meet deadlines.

·         Excellent interpersonal and relationship-building skills, with the ability to engage with a range of internal and external stakeholders.

·         A Collaborative team player with a positive and solution-driven attitude.

·         Exceptional written and verbal communication skills.
