ELM Inc. is an industry leading Canadian service company with over 30 years of direct industry experience, offering single-source Environmental Liability Management services. We are currently seeking a full-time Operations Engineer who will be based in our Calgary office, with occasional travel to site operations throughout Western Canada.
The Operations Engineer oversees all aspects of well abandonments; creates and develops programs for field supervisors to follow in the suspension and abandonment of oil and gas wells. The Operations Engineer is responsible for a variety of engineering assignments that require a general familiarity within the broad field of oil and gas well drilling, production, and completions. Developing the definition and scope of services provided to a diverse group of clients is a key function, and the Operations Engineer will also be responsible for compliance with project schedules and budgets. Protecting the environment and safety are significant concerns.
Key Responsibilities:
- Play a key role in well abandonment, gas migration, and vent flow repairs
- Specific work may include well file review, programming, cost estimating, and liaising with field supervisors, clients, and regulatory personne
- Be involved in all stages of a project from initial consultation through to final invoicing
- Provide guidance and supervision in the design and implementation of well re-entry, drilling, well completion, and abandonment’s programs
- Work with clients to produce conclusions, recommendations, and develop long-term well liability solutions for well suspensions and well abandonments
- Work with service providers to design logging and cementing programs to address well issues
- Be aware of various current and developing technologies
- Ensuring that operations and processes meet or exceed regulatory, environmental, and that safety aspects are considered at all stages
- Review and ensure all 3rd party service providers are in good standing with regulatory bodies
- Lead and mentor Jr. Engineers and/or other support staff
- Communicate with internal team and field personal daily
- Work with site contractors and service providers to ensure compliance with ELM and client policies
- Provide coordination and support for effective and efficient input and oversight of a 3rd party providers for all new projects
- Provide technical direction and support to field operations
- Oversee and support other members of the abandonment and decommissioning teams on technical and general projects and task
- Support and contribute to RFP’s
- Able to identify opportunities in the market to grow the business unit
- Assist in the design process for improving project process efficiencies and cost
- Tracking, recording, and reporting on operational activities and expenditures work on daily, weekly, monthly, and quarterly basis
- Thorough understanding of WCSB governing regulations, AER requirements for well abandonment, decommissioning operations including nonroutine well abandonment applications and comfortable with DDS system
Qualifications
- A Bachelor’s degree or diploma in an Engineering field or technology degree, or suitable field experience
- Registered member of APEGA (P.Eng.) and/or ASET would be an asset
- Minimum of 5 years progressive Project Management experience in oil and gas industry with an emphasis on abandonment and decommissioning
- Related familiarity and experience in well servicing, cementing, cased and open-hole logging, coiled tubing operations, drilling in open hole and cased hole, etc. is an asset
- Be aware of the regulatory requirements of Provinces and Territories in Western Canada related to well servicing, suspension, and abandonments
- Candidates with experience in completions operations is an asset
- Previous supervisory experience in the abandonment and decommissioning sector
- Valid Drivers License with a clean abstract
- Valid certifications for IRP 7 requirements, H2S, Ground Disturbance, WHMIS, other relevant certifications

- Organized with ability to prioritize, document and complete assignments with minimal supervision to meet project scope and budget
- Advanced computer skills and good working knowledge of Microsoft Office suite; as well as competent familiarity with Accumap, AbaData, & other industry software
- Knowledge in reading cased hole and open hole logs, identifying leak sources
- Experience in remedial repairs, perforating, cementing, blends and trying alternate technologies
- Experience with pipeline abandonment, facility decommissioning, and sour operations are an asset
- Demonstrated supervisory experience for several field contract services at a time
- Strong desire to provide excellent, innovative, practical customer services, and a commitment to technical excellence
