OVERVIEW
Vertex is currently accepting applications for full-time, permanent Intermediate Environmental Scientist (Reclamation) in Sherwood Park, Alberta. The successful candidate will be responsible for managing and executing upstream oil and gas and industrial projects in accordance with Vertex guidelines and project scopes. This role will focus on reclamation projects including, development of work plans and cost estimates, initial pre-reclamation assessment of sites overseeing and dev eloping vegetation management, monitoring and re-vegetation programs , completing detailed site assessments (DSAs), training junior staff on field execution of DSAs in Alberta, Saskatchewan and B.C, and supervision of light duty reclamation work. This individual will play a critical role in the execution of all aspects of reclamation scopes while delivering a cost-effective approach that exceeds our client’s expectations.
CANDIDATE QUALIFICATIONS
- Diploma or higher education related to environmental sciences, biology, or other related discipline
- Currently poses a professional designation applicable for conducting professional sign off in Alberta and or Saskatchewan
- Possess a valid Class 5 drivers license with a clean driving record
- Minimum 4 to 7 years of environmental work experience with experience in:
- DSAs
- Pre-reclamation assessments
- reclamation monitoring programs (vegetation control, and surficial reclamation work activities)
- Development of cost estimates for site reclamation
- Preparing reclamation closure reports for submission in Alberta and/or Saskatchewan
- Training and mentoring junior staff on field programs for DSA and vegetation management programs
- Project management experience is an asset – cost estimates, scheduling, budget tracking client interactions and communications.
- Experience in managing upstream reclamation projects
- Willingness to work in the field for extended periods of time; willingness to travel within Western Canada as required
- Excellent communication and technical reporting skills
- Commitment to collaboration and teamwork
- Strong time management and organizational skills
- Working knowledge of reclamation regulations in Alberta, Saskatchewan, and British Columbia
- Contaminated sites background a strong asset
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Spend up to 80% of work hours performing technical field programs
- DSAs
- Pre-reclamation assessments
- reclamation monitoring programs (vegetation control, and surficial reclamation work activities)
- Training and mentoring junior staff on field programs for DSA and vegetation management programs
- Supervision of reclamation projects associated with site contouring, soil replacement and re-vegetation as required
- Responsible for project coordination, cost control and project scoping to ensure effectively versatile solutions are developed to meet client’s regulatory needs and budgets.
- Responsible for both field and office execution of environmental projects with an emphasis on field work
- Active stewardship of Vertex and client safety programs is expected
- Responsible to build relationships within Vertex, with regulators and clients to effectively develop and manage projects within the environmental business unit
- Mentor and coach junior environmental staff

This position will be based out of our Sherwood Park, Alberta Office
