The opportunity
We are seeking a Pipeline Technician to join our Canada Gas Operations team in Southern Alberta. Reporting to the Rocky Mountain Region Pipeline Manager, the successful candidate will operate, maintain, test, and inspect our natural gas pipelines and associated facilities throughout Southern Alberta.

This individual must be a self-starter, capable of working with minimal supervision, who possesses excellent troubleshooting, problem solving and communication skills.

The regular work schedule for this position will be:
Week 1 – Monday to Thursday at 9 hours per day; 8 hours on Friday
Week 2 – Monday to Thursday at 9 hours per day; Friday is a day off

What you’ll do

  • Plan and lead pipeline isolation and gas handling activities including blowing down, purging and pressuring pipelines and the installation and operation of air movers/expellers
  • Perform inspections, troubleshooting and repair on equipment such as actuators, valves, stem seals, and other related components
  • Assist with various tasks associated with in-line inspection programs
  • Perform line locates
  • Assist with all types of line crossings (foreign or seismic) of TC Energy pipeline assets
  • Complete basic “as built” prints and update related documentation with respect to line locating and pipeline related schematics
  • Identify encroachment issues
  • Communicate with contractors, the general public, landowners, and government agencies relative to gas operations
  • Read and interpret alignment sheets
  • Lead/manage the safe and efficient completion of low-complexity projects, including coordination and monitoring of contractor work activities or third-party active control
  • Assist with general pipeline right-of-way (ROW) maintenance activities such as erosion or sink hole repairs, line patrols, and installation of identification signs and posts
  • Perform gas leak surveys
  • Complete work orders, enter data into job plans, create notifications in SAP
  • Operate and maintain natural gas pipelines and associated equipment
  • Respond to emergencies as needed

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • 2 years of relevant work experience related to Pipelines
  • Proven Mechanical knowledge, skills and experience

Preferred Qualifications

  • Technical diploma or apprenticeship training
  • Experience with valve operation, inspection, maintenance and repair 
  • Experience operating and maintaining high pressure natural gas pipelines and/or facilities
  • SAP experience

This position requires candidates to:

  • Have and maintain a valid driver’s license and provide a driver’s abstract (record) for review
  • Successfully complete a pre-employment medical screening, including drug and alcohol testing
  • Carry up to 50 lbs., climb ladders to swing valves, wear a respirator, work in extreme temperatures, and walk extensively in indoor and outdoor industrial areas
  • The hours of work in this role may need to be extended as business needs arise, and the position is subject to call out in emergency situations
  • Travel to other company locations for project support, temporary assignments, meetings, emergencies or training which may involve overnight stays away from home
  • Spend more than 50% of their time away from their home location during peak project times
